Last month, OpenAi started extending the Deep Research tool of ChatGPT to all paying users, rather than only for those paying the most amount of money per month to use the AI chatbot. More recently, it looks like Google is doing one better, announcing that it is giving free users of Gemini access to its own iteration of Deep Research.

This is part of a short list of other previously paid features being made available to free users of Google Gemini. Deep Research itself is getting upgraded, now powered by Gemini 2.0 Flash Thinking Experimental model from the previous 1.5 Pro. The long and short of it is that everything that you would want the tool to do, it now does it better.

For a longer answer, it means that “Gemini how shows its thoughts while it browses the web, giving a real-time look into how it’s going about solving your research task”. The final reports themselves is claimed to be :more detailed and insightful”.

As you’d expect, Google is only giving access to free users of Gemini a few uses of Deep Research a month, though no specific number was provided. paid users continue to get more uses, while also getting “expanded access” to the tool.

5⃣ Deep Research is even smarter, rolling out for everyone to try.

Today, we're giving Gemini users the ability to try Deep Research, your personal AI research assistant, at no cost. 🧠✨

Another Gemini Advanced feature that is being made available to free users is Gems, or custom versions of the AI chatbot, tailored to specific tasks. While there are a few pre-made ones, you can only make new custom ones while using Gemini on desktop.
