Netflix recently slapped VMWare, the Broadcom-owned virtualisation company, over multiple allegations of patent infringement. Supposedly, the latter had “willfully and deliberately” infringed on the former’s patented innovations without permission, and continue to do so.
The Netflix lawsuit, which was filed in a California federal court, states that its patents are still being used in products like vSphere Foundation, VMware Cloud Foundation, along with offerings for VMWare clients that include AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, and more. In light of the accusations, the streaming service is seeking monetary compensation but did not make clear the amount it is seeking.
This patent issue reportedly goes all the way back to 2018, when Broadcom kicked things off by hitting Netflix with a lawsuit, claiming that it was the streaming service was the one that had infringed on its patents for its technology. That lawsuit appears to be ongoing and spans multiple countries, including the US, Germany, and the Netherlands.
