As part of the Budget 2025 tabling, prime minister Anwar Ibrahim, who is also finance minister, announced that the RM2,400 subsidy for electric bikes will continue. RM10 million has been allocated for this to encourage e-bike ownership. This was first introduced in last year’s budget tabling, intended to assist those earning RM120,000 or less annually.
On the flip side though, there was no mention of an extension of tax breaks for EVs. This means that once 2026 rolls around, there will no longer be any tax breaks for CBU EVs. There’s also a mention of Perodua working on an EV that will cost below RM100,000 without further elaboration.
Also, Anwar mentioned during the budget tabling what the government will to with the profits earned from the sale of the new number plates for vehicles, or the JPJePlate. These will go to the less privileged. Or more specifically, parts will be channeled to MyLesen B2 bike license assistance program, estimated to benefit 15,000 youths. In the same vein, it will also be used to get 67,000 free bike helmets that will be distributed to motorcyclists.
Finally, part of the proceeds of the special number plates will also be sued to fund flight tickets for 60,000 less privileged graduates. Special emphasis was mentioned for those from East Malaysia.
