Nvidia To Make G-Sync No Longer Require Dedicated Module

Provided the monitor runs a MediaTek chip, anyway.

For the longest time, display hardware needed a dedicated G-Sync module for it to be able to make use of the tech. Nvidia later introduced G-Sync Compatible which, while it made supporting variable refresh rates (VRR) on monitors more widespread, it still didn’t provide the full suite of the tech’s benefits. This will soon change – rather than needing a dedicated module, your display will need something by MediaTek instead.

This comes as part of a partnership announced between Nvidia and MediaTek to integrate all of the former’s G-Sync tech into the latter’s scalers. As mentioned above, the idea here is to provide all the benefits of G-Sync, including the new Pulsar that provides improved motion clarity, without the extra cost that comes with the dedicated module. Hopefully this means the tech also becomes more affordable for gamers to buy, rather than just display makers to produce.

As for which monitors will be among the first batch to benefit from this, Nvidia mentions three specifically in its announcement post. These are the AOC Agon Pro AG276QSG2, the Acer Predator XB273U F5, and the ASUS ROG Swift 360Hz PG27AQNR. All three of them will come 360Hz refresh rates, 1440p resolution, and HDR support. They are “expected later this year”, but with no exact date yet. And no surprise, the same applies to their prices as well.

There have been a handful of announcements and rumours between Nvidia and MediaTek in recent months. There was one about the two companies working on new chipsets with the former’s GPU tech. This is not it, though on the surface it sounds similar enough.
