Apple May Use Larger, Lower Resolution Displays For More Affordable Headset

In addition to other cut features like the EyeSight display.

There have been plenty of rumours as of late surrounding the supposed more affordable version of the Apple Vision Pro mixed-reality headset. Late last year, Mark Gurman of Bloomberg claimed that to reduce the size of its price tag, this cheaper headset will be sacrificing its “Mac grade chip” as well as the EyeSight reverse passthrough feature. More recently, it looks like the displays on the inside will also be another part of the cost-cutting equation.

Korean news outlet The Elec reports that Apple is looking for other suppliers of OLED-on-Silicon (OLEDoS) panels for its headsets, having requested such details from Samsung and LG. More specifically, the fruit brand is evaluating the display makers’ ability to prduce OLEDoS panels ranging between 2.0 and 2.1 inches, and with a pixel density of 1,700 PPI.

For context, the report notes that the current Apple Vision Pro uses OLEDoS from Sony that measure 1.42 inches, and with a pixel density of 3,391 PPI. These are said to cost US$456 (~RM2,151) a pop, slightly higher than estimates from a couple of Bill of Materials which surfaced last year suggest. While a larger display with just over half the pixel density will no doubt cost less, it’s unclear what the difference will actually end up being.

On one hand, the report sheds light on a third possible cost cutting measure for a more affordable version of the Apple mixed-reality headset. But on the other, it does not corroborate or refute a prior prediction that the idea of more affordable is mostly only when compared to the Vision Pro.
