Apple’s More Affordable Headset May Not Be That Affordable After All

Sacrificing its EyeSight display and M2 chip, but still possibly costing US$2,500.

The Apple Vision Pro headset has a price tag that’s pretty astronomical, to say the least. So it makes sense that the fruit company would work on making a more affordable version. Indeed, Mark Gurman of Bloomberg has made such a claim before. But while this reportedly less costly model will ditch some of its key features to do so, it may still end up with quite the unapproachable price.

In the latest edition of his Power On newsletter, Gurman claims that this cheaper Apple Vision Pro will be dropping two key features that sets the fruit companys headset apart from the rest. One is the EyeSight display, which shows other people the eyes of the wearer while they are not engaged in content. This claim was made in a prior edition of his newsletter, so no big surprise on this front.

The other is the “Mac grade chip” which in the case of the original model means the M2 chip. No word on what the replacement chip would be, but considering the Apple Silicon range consists only of the A and M series, chances are the headset would use the A17 Pro, the current latest and greatest of its series.

All that being said, while these reductions would mean a steep price point reduction on comparison to the original Apple Vision Pro, the lower price is relative. This is because, as Gurman claims, we’ll still be looking at a price range of between US$1,500 (~RM7,104) and US$2,500 (~RM11840).

At any rate, these will likely not be out until way after the original Apple Vision Pro, with its monstrous US$3,500 price tag, becomes available. Which is currently still slated for early next year in the US, with other unspecified regions getting it after. Who knows, maybe they will be revealed during WWDC 2024 and only launch the year after, just like the brand’s first headset.
