During MWC 2024, Chinese mobile phone maker, Tecno, revealed the Pocket Go, a gaming handheld console with an emphasis on augmented reality (AR). To that end, it comes with its own pair of AR glasses.
Specs-wise, the Pocket Go is powered by AMD’s new Hawk Point Ryzen 7 8840HS and comes with a configurable power envelope of 20W, 30W, and 35W for peak performance. To keep the handheld cool, Tecno installed three copper heatpipes to help dissipate the heat generated by it. Other specifications include 16GB LPDDR5 RAM, a 1TB PCIe 4.0 SSD, and a 50Whr battery that is also replaceable.
On a related note, the integrated GPU of the 8840HS is still the same Radeon 780M, which comes with 12 RDNA3 Compute Units. Basically, it’s the same model as the ones used in the Ryzen 7 7840U, Z1 Extreme, and the desktop Ryzen 7 8700G. To that end, the processor itself will be able to hit boost clocks of up to 5.1GHz.
Moving on, the display output is handled by the Pocket Go’s packaged AR Glasses with a 0.71-inch Micro-OLED display mounted inside the lenses, and is capable of emulating the experience of having a 215-inch TV directly in front of your face, and from six metres away. In addition, the AR glasses also come with a six-axis gyroscope, what the brand calls N’BASS nano-structured acoustic materials, advanced AI head tracking, and vibration algorithms. All of which are designed to “enhance immersive gaming”. Oh, and it also features an adjustable diopter of up to 600°.
At the time of writing, Tecno did not specify when the Pocket Go will be available, or if it plans on opening the AR handheld up globally or to a select number of markets. It also doesn’t specify whether the headset runs Windows 11, although given the hardware powering it, it’s highly likely that it does.
