Most of these look pretty familiar.

Swedish telecommunications company Ericsson is very involved in the country’s deployment of 5G tech, to say the least. With that, it is probably no surprise that the company has decided to announce its inaugural Imagine Live event in Malaysia.

As you’d imagine, this tech showcase event has Ericsson showing off what sort of tech can be made possible with the new 5G tech. This range from consumer-facing tech to the stuff that happen behind the scenes on the enterprise front. But in all fairness, there’s not much going on here that we haven’t seen before, especially on the consumer side of things.

Going through the highlights that Ericsson is showcasing, one is an example of 5G tech that was first showcased in autonomous driving tech being repurposed for the agricultural field instead. Another field that is involved quite frequently here is using the speed and low latency of 5G for VR and AR content. Or as the company put it, the “metaverse”, to use the phrase popularised by the Facebook parent. Be it for entertainment or for education, this media format is definitely one that can benefit from the speed of data transfer that 5G tech promises.

Outside of extended reality content, cloud gaming is another field that Ericsson is showcasing that its 5G tech can improve. Specifically on this front, the company highlights what is called the Quality on Demand (QoD) API. Notably, in the short presentation by the company, the API allows for either the game publisher or the player to pay network providers for additional bandwidth to keep the streaming experience a smoother one.

Once again, these are not exactly ground-breaking applications of 5G tech. But those that are consumer-facing highlight once again one of the limitations of 5G for the average consumer, which is cost, especially for metered connections.
