NVIDIA Is Splitting GeForce RTX 4070 Reviews Embargoes Into MSRP and Non-MSRP Models

It also looks like its availability date is more or less confirmed.

Earlier in the week, we wrote about how NVIDIA had possibly set the launch date for its fourth Ada Lovelace card, the Geforce RTX 4070, for 13 April. Well, as it turns out, that launch date seems more or less confirmed and at the same time, the GPU brand appears to be splitting the review embargoes into two parts: MSRP and non-MSRP SKUs.

According to Videocardz, the media and hardware reviewers should receive their samples of the RTX 4070 sometime at the beginning of April, giving each group about one week to do their tests and then publish their findings by the respective deadlines. By that, we mean that reviews of the MSRP models would be allowed to go up by 12 April, while the non-MSRP reviews would only be allowed to go live the following day.

One possible theory behind the different RTX 4070 embargoes could be that NVIDIA is splitting the review embargoes based on the market price of custom-cooled models, instead of the factory overclocked designs that usually cost a taller premium. It’s all a bit confusing, especially since it is unlikely that people will be reading the reviews of the non-MSRP cards on the day of their availability. That said, it is also unlikely that people will be clamouring up at retail stores in order to get the GPU, at least not until they’ve done their due diligence in reading the in-depth reviews of the card.

As mentioned at the start of the article, the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 will be the fourth installment under the GPU brand’s Ada Lovelace architecture. Like its more powerful Ti counterpart, it is expected to run on the same AD104 GPU, but with less CUDA cores than its sibling. Specifically, 5888 CUDA cores. Other alleged details of the card suggests that the card will also run with the same 12GB of graphics memory, but with the lower-tier GDDR6 and not the GDDR6X modules, currently reserved for the RTX 4090, 4080, and 4070 Ti.

In any case, we’ll likely be hearing more about the RTX 4070 from NVIDIA during its GTC 2023 event, which is scheduled to kick off on 20 March.
