The national 5G company Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB) has achieved its target of having 5G coverage in 40% of populated areas throughout Malaysia. In fact, the exact figure is 47.1% according to a statement released by the company today.

DNB also pointed out that the company managed to achieve its 5G coverage in populated area (COPA) target for 2022 in the majority of states throughout the country. Among them, including Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, Johor, Pulau Pinang, Perak, and Sabah while in Putrajaya, Melaka, and Sarawak, the differences were less than 5%.

Another factor that seemingly helps DNB achieves its 2022 deployment target is the company’s decision to bring forward the deployment schedule for several states such as Pahang, Terengganu, Kelantan, Kedah, and Perlis. That being said, the COPA rate is still rather minuscule at the moment as it ranged from 9.5% to 18.2% and DNB has also stuck to its original plan of not deploying 5G in Labuan within 2022.

Meanwhile, the company has also shared some performance statistics for 2022 as part of today’s announcement. Among them is the peak consumption rate that has since reached 253TB per day alongside maximum concurrent users of 90,000 and 380Mbps average download speed.

As of the end of 2022, there are around 3,900 5G sites all over Malaysia covering approximately 15 million users said the company. It goes without saying that DNB is quite confident of achieving its 80% COPA target by the end of 2024 even though it is currently facing scrutiny from the government as noted by PM Anwar Ibrahim last month.

At the moment, 5G plans are available in various forms for prepaid and postpaid mobile customers from Celcom, Digi, U Mobile, Unifi Mobile, and Yes although only Yes has offered a 5G home broadband plan to consumers for now. Maxis is expected to join the foray later this month once the telco is able to seek approval from its shareholders in regard to the 5G access agreement with DNB.
