AirAsia has launched an arsenal of new features on its Super App aimed at fostering communities in its ecosystem. The expansion comes as its parent company, Capital A, unveils a grand vision for an AirAsia “Republic” where users across the ASEAN region engage and share travel information.

The app seems to be venturing towards social media with users being able to set up a profile complete with profile photos, a bio, and a nickname. Like a lot of other social media platforms, there is also a shareable QR code for others to easily scan and find your profile.

The chat platform already enables one-on-one interactions between users as well as the ability to add people from your contact list in addition to any other user from the communities section. With the upgrade, the company teased that a private group feature will soon be coming to the app, which will allow you to form your own groups with whomever you wish.

The biggest addition to its community push is the launch of AirAsia Gifts. Partnering with COOP Marketing Group, a South Korean mobile voucher platform, users can now send cross-border gifts directly through the app. Currently, the feature is available in Malaysia, Indonesia, and Singapore, but will eventually expand to other ASEAN countries.

Gifts that can be purchased include vouchers for AirAsia flights, hotels, food, and about 300 other brands in various categories such as Zalora, Starbucks, FamilyMart, PlayStation Network, and more. The gifts are sent through chats and can be personalised. The Super App will even send you a reminder to purchase a gift when it’s one of your friend’s birthdays.

Lastly, AirAsia has added over 40 mini-games to keep users in the app, with two original games at launch. The company also stated that it plans to launch a feature to enable users to compete against one another.
