With the country entering the endemic transition phase, COVID-19 related restrictions have laxed somewhat. That being said, crowds remain a concern when it comes to the spread of the virus. And it’s usually difficult to control the number of people who head into a Ramadan bazaar. The Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) has a tool that it has deployed at two bazaars to make it a lot easier.

In use at the SS 6/1 Kelana Jaya and Section 4 Kota Damansara bazaars are the Crowd Controlled System that tracks the number of people going in and out of the bazaar spaces. These two locations were selected due to their popularity, and by extension high human traffic.

This uses infrared tech to track the number of people entering and leaving in real time, with results being displayed on a screen. Using this, city council officials are able to ensure that the crowd size at the two bazaars do not exceed the maximum capacity as stipulated by the current SOP.

The tracking screen is displayed at the entrance and exit. This gives visitors who show up in groups a rough idea as to if they’re in for a long wait before it’s their turn to go into the bazaar space.
