S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 Devs Announce NFT For Game, U-Turns A Day Later

That was quick.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chernobyl is set to launch on 28 April 2022. Building up to its launch, the game’s devs at GSC Game World announced that it will be adding NFT elements to the game. In the span of about a day, thanks to immense backlash, the studio has reversed this stance, stating it will not have anything NFT-related.

In the backtracking tweet, the devs say that it is doing so in “the interests of our fans and players”. There’s also a part that reads “whatever the cost is”, which sounds charged, to say the least.

The implementation of NFT in S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chernobyl was shaky at best. One element in the original plan include letting players that bought into the NFT spiel be NPCs in the game’s open world. Tokens for these were supposed to be auctioned on DMarket next month. What makes this implementation particularly egregious is the fact that NFT is a completely unnecessary part of the process of making a player an NPC.

In what was a very small amount of time, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chernobyl was to be the only other game besides Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Breakpoint to have NFTs in them. And that’s not happening anymore.
