Spotify is introducing a new affordable plan aimed at tertiary students. Spotify Premium for Students will cost RM7.90 per month for those over 18 and studying at an accredited college or university for up to four years.

The plan is only valid for 12 months, meaning that you have to get re-verified as a student every year, and you can subscribe as much as three more times or when you finish school. Spotify says that you can continue using your student account after graduating until it expires as long as you last subscribed while still a student.

Once your subscription is finished, you will be automatically rolled over to the standard Premium plan that costs RM14.90 per month. If you’ve never gotten Premium before, your first month will be free and you can cancel anytime.

To qualify for this plan, students must first get verified through SheerID by filling in your details and what institution you attend. Don’t worry if your college or university is not on the list, as you can request to add your school through this form, but it might take up to 30 days for SheerID to verify your school.

After you fill in the form, you’ll be asked to verify your status as a student by either logging into your school’s portal, or if that’s not available, you can upload supporting documents. According to Spotify’s FAQ, documents that can be used include an Official Enrolment Letter, a class schedule, a transcript, or a tuition receipt. Offer letters will reportedly not be accepted as proof.

In other news, Spotify is also lowering the price for both its Premium Mini plans. Mini subscriptions let you subscribe for only a short period for those who might want Spotify Premium, but not on a regular basis. The daily subscription, which was already reduced from RM1.50 to RM1, now only costs just RM0.75 a day. The weekly subscription is also getting a price cut, from the previous rate of RM3.90 per week, to the new rate of RM2.90.
