Huawei has the Mate X as its main foldable phone. But it’s likely that it also has a smaller one that competes with the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip. The company has filed for a patent that depicts its take on a foldable phone with the clamshell form factor.
TigerMobiles shared images from the patent, which was filed with the China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA). In the business side of things, the Huawei clamshell device is depicted as having a screen with a rectangular notch for the earpiece, and possibly a front facing camera.
On the outside, there’s an unusual elongated camera island bump. Another elongated segment continues beyond the camera, without any indication of what it is. Being just a patent, there’s no telling what sort of specs it will pack either.
But as always, it remains to be seen if this patent will ultimately end up as a consumer product. If it does, then it will serve as competition for the successor to Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip, which is rumoured to have three cameras at the back. But chances are this will only be a thing long after Samsung launches the successor device to its current clamshell.
