Minister of Science and Technology, Khairy Jamaluddin has revealed that the Malaysian government is working on another mobile app as part of COVID-19 contact tracing effort in our country. The new app which is called MyTrace will co-exist alongside the previously released MySejahtera app.
In the same tweet, Minister Khairy has also explained that the MyTrace is designed to perform contract tracing for the general population especially once the government concludes or relaxes the Movement Control Order (MCO) restrictions. On another hand, the MySejahtera app is meant for health monitoring purposes mainly for users that are in quarantine regardless of voluntarily or otherwise.
Said to be developed using React Native framework, the Bluetooth-based app is being built locally by a team that apparently include experts from Google Malaysia. The government is planning to release the app’s code as open source, according to Minister Khairy.
In terms of availability, the beta version of MyTrace could be ready in few days’ time and will be made available through Google Play as well as iOS App Store. We have asked whether Huawei users will be able to obtain MyTrace from Huawei AppGallery or otherwise but have yet to receive a response from the minister.
