Sony’s original PlayStation was a very popular console, with over 102.5 million sold. The PlayStation 4 has just overtaken this number in sales. This makes the current gen console taking its place as the second best-selling console of all time.
Sony’s financial report states that the company sold 2.8 million of the current generation console this quarter. Adding this on top of the 100 million sold up to the last quarter pushes it above the original.
That said, the numbers are not going to improve by a lot until the PS5 comes out. With its release officially slated for next year’s holiday season, the company expects sales of the PS4 to be less than originally forecast.
All that said, it’s unlikely that the PlayStation 4 will be taking the crown of best-selling console of all time from the PlayStation 2. The latter is by far the most successful console in gaming history, with over 155 million units bought by gamers.
