Power Rangers Movie is Getting Another Reboot

The 2017 Power Rangers movie starring Naomi Scott, Dacre Montgomery, RJ Cyler, Ludi Lin and Beck G is a decent movie. As a moderate fan of the original Power Rangers series (and its many spinoffs), I found myself enjoying most of Dean Israelite’s modern retelling. The critics’ circle was split down the middle; its 50% rotten tomatoes score indicates that half of the critics gave the movie a thumbs up, while the others gave it a thumbs down.

It did, however, get an ‘A’ on Cinemascore, which tells us that the general audiences who watched Power Rangers 2017 really enjoyed it. The problem is, hardly anybody even watched it. Power Rangers grossed a disappointing $US 142.3 million with a $US 100 million production budget. Surprisingly, the film faltered outside of the US as well, raking in merely $US 56 million. Believe it or not, Power Rangers was only the 17th highest-grossing film in Malaysia that year ($US 2.7 million).

So, while fans of the film were looking forward to a sequel, most of us knew we weren’t going to get it. Well, in an interesting bit of update, it looks like we are going to be getting another Power Rangers film on the big screen, except it’s not a sequel but a complete reboot.

Dacre Montgomery who plays the Red Ranger in the film participated in a Reddit AMA on the Stranger Things subreddit in celebration of the release of season 3 of the popular Netflix series. When asked by a Reddit user on whether there were plans for more Power Rangers movies, Montgomery said:

“I think there is a movie in the works but it’s not with me and the cast. So yes but not with us.”

Of course, we have to keep in mind that this isn’t an official announcement from the studio and actors aren’t necessarily always kept in the loop as far as future projects go. However, assuming what Montgomery said is true, then I find it rather peculiar indeed. It’s peculiar that Lionsgate and Saban would even want to take another stab at this property given how poorly it performed at the box office. But it’s also peculiar that they’re opting for a reboot instead of a continuation, considering the best part about the movie is the talented and charismatic cast.
