Mega Spoilers ahead…
Spider-Man: Far From Home is the final chapter of phase three of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And considering it’s the epilogue to the Infinity Saga, Far From Home isn’t an epic, emotionally heavy film in the vein of Avengers: Endgame, but rather a smaller, more focused romantic-dramedy with cool action sequences and an antagonist who isn’t interested in wiping out the galaxy. But this isn’t to say that the film didn’t have its fair share of twists, turns and shocking moments. There are plenty!
Perhaps the most shocking moment, though, happens during the mid-credits sequence. Spider-Man: Far From Home ends with Spidey taking his girlfriend MJ out for a swing around the city. The mid-credits picks up immediately after that. Spidey and MJ get distracted by a news broadcast on a large screen in the middle of the city. We see J. Jonah Jameson (J.K. Simmons) of the DailyBugle.net praise Mysterio and reveal Spider-Man’s identity. “PETER PARKER!!” he yells.
This is an interesting development because while most of The Avengers have chosen to reveal their identities anyway, Peter Parker has kept his a secret. Peter’s identity has always been a big deal, even in the comics and the revelation of the man under the Spider-Man mask has been part of major storylines in the Civil War comic. Plus, it also puts the lives of those he loves in danger. In an interview with ScreenRant, director Jon Watts mentioned that because he chose to reveal Spider-Man’s identity this early, directing the sequel is gonna be tricky business.
“You get to see Peter reveal his identity to the world in Civil War [comic]. I’m going to have to do that homework too now, I’ve sort of painted myself in the corner. I gotta go back to the archive.”
Spider-Man: Far From Home truly shakes the foundation of not only the Spidey universe, but the MCU in general. I think we can expect the next Spider-Man movie to be much denser and perhaps more emotional as well.
Spider-Man: Far From Home is currently playing in Malaysian cinemas.
