A new patent by Canon in Japan has appeared online for its standard 18-55mm lens. What makes this patent different however is the inclusion of a small LCD display right on the lens.
This is not Canon’s first lens with a build-in LCD display; the EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS II already feature a similar display for status display purposes. What is now however is the inclusion of said LCD lens in a standard kit lens, which may be heading to future DSLR models.
In the patent, the LCD display is referenced as a “lens information display” which suggests that it will show pertinent information such as focal length, aperture, and more.
While the appearance of the patent may indicate we will see a new standard kit lens for 2018, it doesn’t confirm any new DSLR sightings though. We will have to wait for Canon to release more information in the near future and that’s if the company is really going to bring this lens into the market.
