Energous, a wireless charging specialist, has received approval from US regulators for its WattUp energy transmitter. The new system allows smartphones and other compatible devices to be charged wirelessly from up to 4.5 metres away from the base charging station.
The system works by converting electricity to a radio frequency and transmitting the signal to a compatible receiver either attached or built-into the device. This is different than the current Qi-based wireless chargers that require the device to be close to the charging coils.
Better still, the WattUp system can charge multiple devices in the room simultaneously. The ecosystem is also manufacturer-agnostic; which means that the transmitter will charge any compatible device. No matter who made the phone or the tablet.
There’s no actual product at the moment, and Energous has only just received FCC approval. The company is preparing to officially unveil the system at CES 2018, and there should be more news about it from there.
