One of the most visited websites in Malaysia is YouTube, which is highly unsurprising. But, wouldn’t it be more interesting to know the details behind what Malaysians do when they are on YouTube? This is where TNS Research and Google Malaysia come in; both companies have released details on YouTube consumption in Malaysia.

The research shows that Malaysians do indeed love YouTube. In fact, it was found that 77% of Malaysians consume YouTube contents through mobile devices. Amongst Malaysians that prefer to watch YouTube on smartphones, 83% opted to use Wi-Fi instead of using their mobile data.

Apparently, there are 23% of Malaysians that do not prefer to use smartphones to watch YouTube at all. According to TNS’s findings, these group of Malaysians have three main issues with watching YouTube on mobile: small screen size, longer time to stream, and the fact that mobile data is still fairly expensive.

Moving on, the top 10 most watched genres on YouTube that Malaysians love to watch are music, movies, comedy, user generated contents, how-to videos, trailers, lifestyle, TV shows, drama and finally education. In addition to that, it was found that 55% of Malaysians prefer YouTube over television. In fact, it was found that most Malaysians prefer to watch televisions only during the evening; the rest of the day is dominated by YouTube.

This raises up an interesting question: with YouTube becoming more and more popular amongst us, at what point in time will the video-sharing platform replace television entirely? Only time will tell.
