Other than being on your hands and wrist, Samsung now wants to be a part of your waist. Introducing, the WELT, which is actually short for “Wellness Belt”, and not the red swollen mark you get when you are hit. It looks like any other belt, except that it has an array of sensors built in to track your waistline and more.
Besides having sensors on the back of the buckle, the Welt also sports a micro USB port on the side for charging. Once the Welt is paired with the user’s smartphone app, it immediately identifies your waistline and counts the number of steps you take in a day. Not only that, it is also capable of monitoring you from over-eating by detecting changes in the belt’s tension.
This isn’t the first time a company has tried to make a smart belt. If you remember Belty from last year’s CES, it was a smart belt that didn’t look smart at all. We’re just glad Samsung designed the Welt so well that it didn’t deserve a welt (pun intended), by making it smart and retaining how a belt should look like.
That said, the Welt is only a prototype from the makers in Samsung’s Creative Labs, which is an in-house design department that lets employees express and design their wildest ideas, so there aren’t any pricing or availability information. However, Samsung did mention that it is considering turning the Welt into a consumer product in the future.
