Sony Interactive Entertainment is offering more support for eSports by introducing the new PlayStation Tournaments feature. Partnering with ESL, Tournaments will make it easier to support online tournaments; starting with the first major NBA 2K17.
PlayStation Tournaments allows people to sign up for online tournaments through the Events tab in the PS4 interface. Once signed up, players will receive reminders on when their matches are scheduled to take place.
It sounds like SIE is planning for some bigger tournaments with the new feature, but it is difficult to say how these will take place. There may be regional issues with running tournaments, and geography may make it difficult to run certain games. For now, it looks like SIE is moving slowly; possibly to work out the early problems before it tries bigger games.
There’s also no word on how one would go about hosting a tournament through PlayStation Tournaments; or even if it is open to third parties. For now, it looks like SIE is only working with ESL to run competitions, but this is likely to change as the feature expands.
