Pokemon Go developer Niantic is reversing bans placed on users who have been using Pokemon locators. This small subset of players were not actually violating the terms of service; although Niantic said that their third party map add-ons had the same effect as a DDoS attack on the Pokemon Go servers.
Not everyone who was banned for using a Pokemon locator will have their ban lifted; as Niantic is being very careful about how it goes about this. Some of the add-ons in question did more than simply attempt to locate Pokemon and were scrapping data from the game database. What data this happens to be is unknown.
According to Niantic, the reversals were made possible by a change in how the servers work. While that may be true, it could also be likely due to the additional bandwidth made available by the millions of players who have stopped playing.
On the other hand, those who have been banned for legitimately cheating will not have their bans reversed. While Niantic shouldn’t have had to explain this, it felt the need to remind people to stop cheating and enjoy the game as it was meant to be played.
