Been waiting for BlackBerry to announce a new tablet? Say hello to the Samsung Galaxy Tab S 10.5 and no, this is not a typo. The tablet from BlackBerry, SecuTablet, a “high-security tablet” that is based on the Samsung Galaxy Tab S 10.5.
The tablet is made by Secusmart, a security company purchased by BlackBerry just last year. It is not for an average consumer, SecuTablet is made for “national and international public sector markets and enterprises”, and features the best of BlackBerry – a high security system.
“Security is ingrained in every part of BlackBerry’s portfolio, which includes voice and data encryption solutions. National and international government customers have entrusted their voice and data communications with the Secusmart Security Card for years. This same technology that is what secures the new SecuTablet.” – Dr. Hans-CHrostoph Quelle, CEO of Secusmart GmbH, a BlackBerry company.
The SecuTablet is a collaboration between BlackBerry, Samsung and IBM. IBM provides the secure app wrapping technology for the tablet. This means that despite its high security, employees are free to install personal apps on the tablet such as Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and WhatsApp. Should they accidently install a malicious app, data and documents stored in the device will not be compromised.
This sounds like an interesting product made possible my three companies. Let’s hope that it’ll be more successful than the BlackBerry Playbook.
