Intel and Google Team Up to Bring Realsense to Phones with Project Tango

Intel and Google RealSense

Excited about seeing Intel RealSense technology on smaller devices? You might get it sooner than you think. At the on-going IDF (Intel Developer Forum) 2015, Intel and Google announced that they are working together to bring Intel RealSense to phones based on Google’s Project Tango.

Sadly though, both companies did not detail on how things would work. They only showed a prototype phablet equipped with a slew of cameras on the back, possibly equipped with the Intel RealSense 3D camera for smartphone that was unveiled back in April.

Google’s Project Tango was first unveiled last February. Equipped with customised hardware and software, the device allows users create a 3D mapping of their surrounding. By using this on Intel’s RealSense, it means that developers can have a better idea of how to create 3D-mapping apps.

Intel’s RealSense technology is usually found on bigger devices like desktops and laptops. However, since the company unveiled a smartphone-sized 3D camera, companies have been teasing RealSense on smaller devices. Back in June, Lenovo announced that they are working on a Windows 10 smartphone with Intel RealSense, and will be launched in 2016.

This is definitely a very interesting collaboration between Intel and Google. Let’s keep our fingers crossed that they will release a working product in the near future.
