Uber Officially Launches uberX in Kuala Lumpur

uberX vehicles and partner drivers

If you’ve always wanted to try out Uber, a luxury limo service that was launched here in Kuala Lumpur about 7 months ago, but can’t afford to do so, then say hello to uberX, a low-cost product that is similar to the UberBLACK premium service, but comes with a much more affordable price.

With the new uberX, which is available within the same Uber app, the company wants to offer the most reliable and highest quality option at each pricing point when it comes to travelling. Uber claims that its uberX service is more affordable than regular budget taxis out there, but are much safer because they have a rigorous screening process on their drivers including:

  • A stringent background check
  • A driving history check
  • Ongoing quality assurance via rating system

All Uber rides are backed by the vehicle’s insurance policy, and riders will always have the option to rate every driver and contribute to the quality of the Uber community with their feedback.

The uberX rates are as follows:

  • Base Fare: RM1.50
  • Fare for distance + time: RM0.55/km + RM0.20/min
  • Minimum Fare: RM2.50

“It’s a thrill to launch uberX in KL because we make getting around this wonderful city so much more affordable, safe and fun. Through this launch, we look forward to continuing to offer choice of convenience for KL residents to get around their city.” – Michael Brown, Regional Manager of Uber Technologies.

To kick things off, Uber says they will be more focused on core service areas within the highest demand, but as more supply partners join the platform, they plan to expand out as quickly as possible.

Uber App

To use uberX, simple download the Uber app to your Android or Apple smartphone. Register for an account and log into it on the app. Simply give it a swipe and you’ll see the uberX option.

Here’s a comparison between UberBLACK and uberX services here in Kuala Lumpur:
