Article Continues After The Jump!
Canon PowerShot N (RM918 | 12.1MP | f/3.0-f5.9 effective 28mm-224mm | Interesting Form Factor)
The PowerShot N was released sometime last year and hasn’t gotten that much attention because of its smaller form factor and frankly alien looks. However at a sub RM1,000 price, the PowerShot N is an interesting value proposition. The screen flips up making it an ideal selfie device and it is quite a handy device. Canon glass and tech ensures that the pictures are of a certain quality and the functionality of making your smartphone a remote viewfinder certainly is a good one.
Usually I’d never recommend a Samsung camera for anyone but at this budget constraint and if you are looking to just start small, the DV150F is a decent enough camera for that. The big draw of the camera is that there is a front facing LCD which allows you to selfie that much better. A gimmick, sure but for that price, It’s not that bad!
This camera needs to introduction. In case you forgot, here’s Nikon Malaysia’s promo video for it (After they made a whole bunch of changes of course)

And of course, here’s our version =)
If you have RM1,000 to spend, you can even get some change for this! Which brings us to our next choice…
Sony CyberShot DSC-QX10 (RM699 | 18.9MP | f/3.3 – f/5.9 | Tethers to most smartphones)
It’s no secret that we are in love with the QX10 and QX100 from Sony. The “camera” has killer specs as well as the convenience of sending files straight to your smartphone for as much editing and instant posting as you want. The QX10 shares the same specs as some of the Sony compacts and at the price of RM699, its a steal. The downside however is that it only allows connection to Android and iOS devices so far and will only latch on to 5inch phones at the largest. If you have one of those, this may be the choice for you!
GoPro Hero 3 White (RM879 | 5MP Stills 1080p Video | Fixed Wide Lens)
This is an honourable mention. If all you want is to shoot without caring about composition, or shoot some crazy POV videos, this could be just for you. It comes with a good array of optional accessories you can get when you have extra money and a decent addition to any kit. Granted I would have preferred the Black Edition, but the white will serve its purpose decently too.
