AMD Radeon R9 Series Graphics Card

Alongside the mainstream-level AMD Radeon R7 graphics card series, AMD have also officially announced the availability of enthusiast-oriented Radeon R9 graphics cards series which will be on the same day as R7 Series which is from 11 October onwards.

With today’s announcement, we are also able to reveal slightly more details on the AMD Radeon R9 270X and R9 280X graphics cards as per what we learned at AMD GPU’14 Tech Day. How about the Radeon R9 290 series, you asked? Well, we have to save that for another day which will come soon enough.

First off, let’s check out their technical specifications:

AMD Radeon R9 Series Graphics Card

As you can see, the Radeon R9 270X ranks in between Radeon HD 7950 and Radeon HD 7870 GHz Edition in terms of computing power. At the same time, the Radeon R9 280X’s computing power falls in between Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition and a standard Radeon HD 7970.

Interestingly, both the R9 270X and R9 280X do not feature AMD TrueAudio Technology as per the cheaper R7 260X and the higher-end R9 290 series cards. Frankly, that seems rather awkward but this particular feature is rather negligible for users that are not putting emphasis on audio experience. Nevertheless, it is still a good feature to have especially when used with games or applications that support the tech.

Additionally, the AMD Radeon R9 280X is also been touted as one of the cards that are built to play DICE’s Battlefield 4 since it comes with 3GB RAM – the official recommended amount of RAM for the game. Of course, let’s not forget the support for Mantle API which both companies co-developed together.

Here are the performance comparison of both cards against their rivals from NVIDIA, as claimed by AMD:

As mentioned earlier, both AMD Radeon R9 270X and R9 280X are scheduled to hit retail stores throughout the world starting from 11 October. Actual release date as well as pricing varied from market to market, so make sure to check them out with your favourite retailers for proper confirmation.
