It looks like together with the introduction of iOS 7 at WWDC 2013, Apple is seriously looking to tap into the game console market. Since the introduction of the very first iPhone, the device has always been thought of as a gaming platform however, due to its touchscreen-only option, the games introduced have always been a little limited in terms of game play and experience. It looks like that is going to change because iOS 7 will open up opportunities for external game controller support.
The changes were mentioned during the Keynote of WWDC, Apple mentioned that the company has added support for MFi game controllers to its SDK. This means that developers can now easily write game apps with physical game controller support instead of having to write software that specifically targets their own hardware should their game come with one.
The entire thing is far from finish though, given iOS 7 is still in its beta version now anyway. According to Touch Arcade, the idea Apple has in mind was revealed in a presentation slide, showing two different style of controllers – one that looks like a typical iPhone case with physical gaming buttons (D-pad, four thumb buttons and two shoulder buttons) and another that looks like a SEGA Genesis controller with the same buttons as well as a dual-stick SNES controller.
