Google Nexus 4: Is This the Phone of the Year?

Google Nexus 4: Is This the Phone of the Year?

It seems even Mother Nature will not stop Google from announcing their new Nexus devices.

We were disappointed to hear that Google had cancelled their New York City event, where they were widely expected to a swathe of new Nexus devices due to Hurricane Sandy. While it was perfectly warranted, Google made sure that Mother Nature did not get in its way of announcing three new Nexus devices: the Nexus 4, Nexus 10, as well as new variations for the Nexus 7.

First up, unsurprisingly, is the LG-made Nexus 4. With more leaks than the Titanic, the Nexus 4 is very much what the extensive rumours and leaks report: a 4.7-inch, 1280 x 768 True HD IPS Plus screen, quad-core 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 Pro processor and 2GB of RAM. Additionally, the Nexus 4 will come in two flavours, with 8GB and 16GB of storage options. However, there is no microSD card support.

Of course, being a Nexus device, the Nexus 4 will run on Android 4.2. Although still called Jelly Bean, there are improvements to the updated OS, such as Gesture Typing (which is pretty much like Swype) and other performance enhancements. There is also a 2100mAh battery fitted in, and the Nexus 4 supports wireless charging. According to Google, the battery is good for over 15 hours of talk time. In addition, there is an 8MP camera at the back, with a feature called Photo Sphere. If the iPhone 5’s Panorama app was an improvement to current panorama apps currently available, Photo Sphere is an evolution to panorama. Photo Sphere let you snap panorama shots on any plane. That means you can shoot in any direction, instead of just from left to right in landscape mode.

Similar to the venerable Galaxy Nexus, this global phone can be used on pretty much any network worldwide, at the expense of LTE connectivity.

Best of all, the price of the Nexus 4 starts at $299 (roughly RM900) for the 8GB version, and $349 (roughly RM1050) for the 16GB variant. Incredibly low prices for such powerful hardware, as well as a guarantee of always updated OS – we might just have a winner on our hands for phone of the year.
