If you are among the new MyKad holders, then you may have noticed some problems when registering for online services that rely on Electronic Know Your Customer (eKYC) systems. This issue arose due to the fact that these systems had not been updated to include support for the redesigned IC. The National Registration Department (JPN) has since confirmed that service providers are working to rectify the issue. Now, MyDigital ID has updated its Android app to support the identity document.
In a post on its official Facebook page, the company announced that users can now use the new-generation MyKad to register for MyDigital ID. To do so, they must first make sure the app has been updated to the latest version, namely 2.10.0. Worth noting that this change only applies to the Android app. For now, iOS and Huawei users must wait, as the feature is not ready for these platforms yet. The platform promised that it will roll out soon, though. In the meantime, users may still register via the kiosks.

Of course, MyDigital ID is only one of many services that rely on eKYC for identity verification. As previously reported, eKYC systems were not adequately prepared for the MyKad design update. To recap, the new IC brings changes in terms of technology and security features. In total, it has 53 security elements, including a dynamic security hologram, UV features, Guilloche patterns and a transparent window.
But the more obvious change is the physical design. The new card shifts the holder’s photo to the left side, rather than keeping it on the right. Other than that, the chip has been moved to the back of the document, with a new QR code placed alongside it. These are some radical changes, so it’s no surprise that an update to existing systems is necessary.

Aside from that, the new IC does affect other systems like the BUDI95 fuel subsidy and SARA cash aid somewhat. Since the card needs to be plugged into the terminal with the chip facing up, users will have to make sure the back of the card is facing up. And yes, this does apply to the aforementioned MyDigital ID kiosks as well.
Either way, existing MyKad holders shouldn’t rush to replace their cards, as these remain valid. Plus, it’s worth waiting to ensure all the kinks in the relevant systems get ironed out.
