Johor is steadily shaping up to become Malaysia’s AI and data centre hub, with multiple companies establishing facilities in the state. In the latest development, YTL Power International Bhd has partnered with state-owned firm JLand Group for a new gigawatt-scale data centre campus.
This project is the product of a strategic partnership between the company’s subsidiary SIPP Power Sdn Bhd and JLand Group’s subsidiary JLG Technopark Sdn Bhd. The facility will be situated at Sedenak Tech Park West within Ibrahim Technopolis (IBTEC), occupying 145 acres of land. That said, SIPP Power can choose to acquire up to 400 acres of additional land, potentially expanding the campus to 545 acres.

The new data centre is expected to further strengthen Johor’s status as a leading regional centre for AI, cloud computing, as well as digital innovation. Moreover, the Sedenak campus will complement YTL’s Green Data Center Park in Kulai, which has a planned capacity of 1.2GW.
The Kulai park houses YTL’s AI infrastructure, which was created in collaboration with NVIDIA. This partnership stretches back to 2023 and resulted in the YTL AI Cloud, providing large-scale GPU-based accelerated computing. It leverages the chipmaker’s GB200 NVL72 system. With the addition of the Sedenak campus, YTL Power should be able to meet the increasing regional demand for cloud computing, AI, and other related services.

With this in mind, neither YTL Power nor JLand Group has disclosed details on the project. And although the two firms have asserted that the development will support skilled employment and generate wider economic activity, it could have other effects, particularly on the surrounding environment and communities.
Previous developments have put a strain on the local water supply. Other than that, data centres demand a lot of power, and their electricity consumption in the country is expected to surge to 73,274 gigawatt-hours by 2035.
