As with the release of any new hardware for a new console generation, the previous generation gets slowly left behind. And that sounds like what Nintendo has in mind for the first generation Switch, as the company focuses its business and development focus in the new console handheld hybrid.
In its most recent financial results briefing, Nintendo said that “going forward, we will shift our primary development focus to Nintendo Switch 2 and expand our business around this platform”. While the company doesn’t explain what this means, we will probably see fewer games made for first device. And at some point, there will only be Switch 2 editions of games.

An interesting question to consider – until Nintendo plays its hand – is what games’ prices be by then. After all, gamers are now paying US$10 (~RM41.76) for for Switch 2 editions of games. It’s unclear if that premium gets turned into a permanent price hike once Switch 1 editions stop being made.
The company does say sales of the first Switch have “maintained a steady pace” after the Switch 2 launch. With that in mind, the company will still “continue sales of Nintendo Switch hardware”, at least for awhile. The company also shared that 84% of Switch 2 owners upgraded from the Switch 1, across its lifetime.
