The government is evaluating the potential use of electronic Know Your Customer (eKYC) identity verification for social media applications under three main laws. These include the Online Safety Act 2025, the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, and the Personal Data Protection Act 2010.

Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said the review would ensure any move aligns with Malaysia’s existing legal framework. “We have our legal framework and authority, and we respect due process,” he said during his winding-up speech on the 2026 Supply Bill for his ministry in Dewan Rakyat yesterday.

Fahmi has directed the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to conduct a detailed study on the proposal, which aims to strengthen accountability and online safety on social media platforms. “While we continue working to improve 5G access and deliver fast, affordable internet, we must also save lives, protect property, and ensure a safer online environment, especially for children and families,” he added.

The eKYC system would require social media platforms to verify users’ ages and identities, helping to safeguard children under 13 and curb online scams. The initiative is part of the government’s broader efforts to enhance digital safety without compromising accessibility.

On a related note, Fahmi previously announced that meetings with officials from various social media operators are slated to take place in Singapore this week. He noted that the implementation of eKYC verification on these platforms will be the main focus of the discussion.
