Apple is reportedly preparing for life after Tim Cook, with hardware chief John Ternus emerging as the leading internal candidate to succeed him. Cook, who turns 65 next month, has led the company through more than a decade of record profits, but upcoming leadership exits are reshaping Apple’s executive structure.
Bloomberg reports that longtime COO Jeff Williams is preparing to leave, leaving no clear number two to succeed the position. Ternus, 50, has since stepped into the spotlight, representing a bridge between Apple’s veteran engineers and a newer generation of leaders. Described as trusted by Cook and known for his focus and technical expertise, Ternus has expanded his influence beyond hardware into product strategy and marketing.

It is said that Apple has also boosted his public presence, from introducing the iPhone Air to making media appearances, in what’s seen as preparation for a larger role. The report adds that other senior leaders, including Johny Srouji and Lisa Jackson, have discussed retirement, while Apple’s AI division continues to face challenges under John Giannandrea. Surprisingly, the company’s charismatic senior vice president of software engineering Craig Federighi isn’t mentioned in the report.
Ternus’ engineering background and leadership over Apple’s core products position him as a logical successor, especially as the company pushes deeper into AI and mixed reality. Additionally, Bloomberg notes that Cook is expected to stay on as board chairman once he steps down.
