Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) has commenced a trial run of its new Vehicle Access Management System (VAMS). The trial began yesterday (1 September) and will continue until 30 November 2025 for KLIA Terminal 1 at Level 5 (departure drop-off) and Level 3 (arrival pick-up). Meanwhile, Terminal 2 will start its trial run on 15 September, also running until 30 November.
The purpose of this system is to promote responsible use of the pick-up and drop-off lanes, which in return will shorten waiting times, ease congestion, and ultimately improve passenger safety. To make this happen, the VAMS has introduced barrier gates for timed entry and exit.

During the trial phase, vehicles will be granted a 10-minute grace period for pick-ups and drop-offs. The system will monitor vehicles that remain beyond this time; however, at the moment, penalty fees will not be imposed.
This is because, during the trial period, the focus is on observing traffic patterns, driver behaviour, and overall system performance to determine the optimal grace period and penalty fee structure for full implementation. However, following the trial period, penalty fees will be introduced to discourage extended waiting at the kerbside.
By doing this, Malaysia Airports hopes people will adapt to the responsible use of the pick-up and drop-off lanes.
“At KLIA, our goal is to create a safer, more efficient, and passenger-friendly airport environment,” said Managing Director of Malaysia Airports, Datuk Mohd Izani Ghani. “The terminal is often travellers’ first and final impression of Malaysia, and we want that to reflect our hospitality and efficiency, particularly as we prepare for Visit Malaysia Year 2026.”
