It’s probably no surprise that social media is commonly misused to spread misinformation. But it looks like two are being summoned by the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) to its headquarters in Bukit Aman to address said issue. In particular, comms minister Fahmi Fadzil says that the police have summoned the top management of TikTok to its HQ.
The minister says this is following delays by the social media outlet in cooperating with the police to address the spread of fake news on its platform. “TikTok is very slow in providing information to PDRM”, Fahmi said. He added that “there will be a meeting at Bukit Aman attended by the Inspector-General of Police Mohd Khalid Ismail and Attorney General Mohd Dusuki.

Besides TikTok, Fahmi also says that Meta Platforms Inc, the parent company of Facebook, has also been summoned. This company, on the other hand, has to explain the spread of immoral content on its platform. More specifically, the issue of dissemination of paedophilia-related content via both Facebook and WhatsApp.
“We see these platforms are not taking the matter seriously, so the dialogue process will continue”, Fahmi says. He also added that “we will summon every platform”, presumably including X, formerly Twitter.
