The Google Vids video editing software was launched last year as part of the company’s Workspace suite of productivity tools. At the time, the browser-based app was only available as a paid add-on. Now, Google has announced that aside from updating Vids with new AI-powered features, it is also making a basic version available for free users.
One of the new premium additions is an image-to-video capability, which is powered by Veo 3. Like the existing tools in Gemini and Flow, this new feature lets the user transform images into video clips. The tool lets the user generate eight-second videos with audio.

Other than the new image-to-video tool, the brand is also introducing AI avatars. Essentially, the user can simply upload a script to the app and have an avatar deliver the content. A video demonstrating the feature depicts a diverse selection of AI avatars to choose from. According to Google, the avatars are ideal for creating videos for training, demos, or onboarding.
Furthermore, the company is introducing a feature that automatically detects filler words and pauses, allowing the user to quickly remove them. Beyond that, Google is planning to introduce noise cancellation and backgrounds next month. New sizing formats are also set to arrive sometime in the future.

Of course, these shiny tools are only available for paying customers. Those using Workspace for free get a stripped down version without all the special AI-powered features. To help users get started with Vids, Google has introduced a new “Vids on Vids” series, which uses the aforementioned AI avatars to present the app’s features.
