WhatsApp, the relatively modern messaging platform, may be looking to take its users back to the days before smartphones. Having let users make voice calls back in 2025, the platform may be adding voice messages for missed calls next.
According to WABetaInfo, WhatsApp is testing the feature with some users on the Android 2.25.23.21 beta build. Of all the features that the messaging platform has tested and rolled out, this is probably the least visually striking. One place where it manifests is during the voice call screen as a button between the “cancel” and “call again” buttons. Another is in the chat window, attached to the missed call bubble.

On the surface, this seems like a pretty redundant feature, as you can always send a text or record a voice message following a missed call. But there’s an arguable advantage to using this method instead. This is because WhatsApp will classify the voice message as part of the missed call. In this instance, recipients are probably more likely to pay it attention, rather than being dismissed as just a message.
Of course, whether or not it turns out that way, we’ll have to wait until the feature rolls out to the general user base. Though for now, as the report notes it’s not even available to all beta testers, it remains to be seen when it will be available for everyone.
