When a vehicle is struck by lightning, its electrical components would suffer damage, and in some instances, the driver and passengers may also be harmed. However, that was not the case for a BYD Song PLUS EV (known in Malaysia as the Sealion 6) in a recent incident in China.
While travelling through the Tieshan service area in Beihai, Guangxi, the SUV was struck by lightning not once, but three times. The dramatic moment was captured by dashcams in nearby vehicles.
Fortunately, despite the heavy and direct lighting hits, the owner was completely unharmed. Furthermore, the three main electrical components – the power battery pack, the electronic control unit, and the motor – were unaffected.
This information was confirmed by Li Yun Fei, General Manager of BYD’s Brand and Public Relations Department. The SUV was sent to a 4S service centre for extensive testing, where technicians reported no signs of short circuits.

Experts believe this remarkable outcome was due to the “Faraday cage” effect, which channels lightning’s electrical energy around the outside of the vehicle rather than through its occupants or sensitive systems. Although there were two distinct strike points on the roof, the rest of the vehicle’s exterior remained undamaged. It also appears that the BYD Song PLUS automatically powered down after the first strike as a precautionary measure.
While the incident may sound alarming, it serves as a testament to how much vehicle safety has improved over time with continuous technological advancements. Nevertheless, it is always wise to remain vigilant and take safety precautions while driving.
