The South Korean automaker Hyundai has officially established Hyundai Motor Malaysia (HMY), signifying its direct entry into the Malaysian market. With this transition, Sime Darby Motors will cease to be the brand’s official distributor in the country. Moving forward, HMY will oversee all aspects of the brand’s operations, including marketing, sales, and customer service.
As part of its expansion, Hyundai Motor Malaysia stated that it is actively building a dedicated local team and laying the groundwork for a robust nationwide dealer network. The company is also preparing to roll out a series of on-ground initiatives aimed at strengthening the Hyundai brand’s presence within the Malaysian automotive landscape. With its workforce expected to grow to 100 employees by the end of the year, HMY has established its Malaysian headquarters at Menara Affin, located at the Tun Razak Exchange (TRX).
Hyundai Motor Malaysia is also set to introduce three new models in the SUV and MPV segments, alongside plans to commence local assembly (CKD) operations in a facility in Kedah by Q3 of 2025. The facility aims to produce up to seven models over the next five years, focusing on internal combustion engine (ICE) and hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs).
This lineup will feature a range of SUVs and MPVs tailored to meet Malaysia’s growing demand for versatile, high-specification vehicles. As production ramps up, approximately 30% of locally assembled vehicles are expected to be exported to neighbouring markets.
In parallel, Hyundai Motor Malaysia is set to upgrade its dealer and after-sales network, beginning with the modernisation of showrooms and enhanced digital integration to deliver a more intuitive and seamless ownership experience. Key improvements will be rolled out across its service network, with plans to expand to 25 outlets by 2030 and implement after-sales system upgrades to elevate the overall customer experience.
The launch of HMY also brings a refresh to all official Hyundai websites and social media platforms in Malaysia.
