Sonos rolled out a major update for its Ace headphones today. Among the updates is the addition of TrueCinema technology and an updated Active Noise Cancellation (ANC).
“We’re pleased to deliver experiences we’ve heard our customers ask for, like the ability for two people to watch TV with their Sonos Ace headphones at the same time. We’ve also worked hard on our TrueCinema technology to create an incredible open-air listening effect so it feels like you aren’t wearing headphones,” said Chris Kallai, VP Product at Sonos.
TrueCinema is the main attraction here, which is essentially the headphones version of TruePlay on Sonos’ soundbars. The feature basically maps the acoustics of a room using the microphones to create a soundscape based on the environment. With the Ace, the function works a little differently, in that it creates an environment that makes it seem like you aren’t wearing the headphones at all.
Sonos is also updating the TV Audio Swap, now allowing two Ace headphones to enjoy the same TV audio in sync when connected to a Sonos soundbar. Previously, only one pair of headphones could be paired to the soundbar.
Finally, the headphone update now brings SideTone to the Ace, a feature that plays a bit of the user’s voice during calls while ANC is on, at low volume.
The Sonos Ace launched last year and earned a spot in our list of wireless headphones to own but was far from perfect. While it delivered on the audio front, the headphones suffered from a lacklustre launch, missing certain features that were promised at launch or in need of tweaking and tuning. The update began has already begun its rollout. If you haven’t received it, it’s probably because the update is being rolled out in batches., in which case, just be patient.
