U Mobile, which has been appointed to deploy the country’s second 5G network, has agreed to sell its entire stake in Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB). The orange telco’s stake will be taken over by rivals CelcomDigi, Maxis, and Yes 5G, as well as the Ministry of Finance (MOF).
Both CelcomDigi and Maxis have filings with Bursa Malaysia revealing that U Mobile is selling its 100,000 shares in DNB at an aggregate sum of RM100,000, with an acquisition price of RM1 per share. CelcomDigi, Maxis, and YTL Power (Yes 5G) will each acquire 33,333 shares, while the MOF will take one share.
With U Mobile’s divestment, the 5G network wholesaler’s shareholding structure will see the MOF’s stake increasing to 41.67% from 34.88% previously, while CelcomDigi, Maxis and YTL Power will each hold 19.44% in DNB compared to their previous 16.28% stake.
The rollout date for the second 5G network has not been revealed yet, but Mobile CTO Woon Ooi Yuen previously mentioned that it could potentially happen during the second half of 2026. When it does get deployed, the telco plans to achieve an 80% of populated area coverage within the first 12 months. It has also officially named Huawei and ZTE as its technology partners for the upcoming deployment.
