Nintendo Is Chasing After Individual Responsible For Last Year’s Pokemon Leak

The company is trying to exert force on Discord to give up the name of the user.

Nintendo says that it is on a warpath and is now actively hunting down the leaker responsible for last year’s massive Pokemon data breach. The game company has asked a US court in the state of California to exert pressure on Discord, the popular instant messaging and VoIP platform, and have it divulge the name of the individual, who went by the handle “GameFreakOUT”.

Specifically, Nintendo wants Discord to give GameFreakOUT’s name, address, phone number, and email address. It said in a subpoena that the person uploaded “confidential materials not released to the public” through a Discord server.

Nintendo is, of course, referring to the data allegedly stolen in a data breach that became known as “Teraleak”, due to the sheer scale of the assets that were posted on the Discord channel. It included source codes, early character designs, as well as details about an upcoming MMO, plus transcripts of design meetings. Heck, it even contained details about a yet-unreleased Detective Pikachu sequel.

Nintendo’s latest actions do not come as a surprise. The brand has a reputation for being one of the most litigious gaming company; it is fiercely protective of its IP and has even gone so far as to not only have Gary Bowser, the hacker who jailbroke its Switch console, jailed, but it also made damn sure that Bowser paid compensation of US$14.5 million (~RM63.6 million), an amount that the man could not hope to repay in this lifetime.

And to say nothing of the way Nintendo has gone after emulators and the groups that created them. Last year, it scored another notch in its belt, having successfully shut down Yuzu and its creators, Tropic Haze.
