The Ministry of Education (MOE) has announced its plans to equip smartboards to over 10,000 schools across Malaysia. With this, the government aims to promote the usage of digital technology and artificial intelligence (AI) within the education system.
Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek stated that, in addition to the provision of smartboards, the MOE is also planning to upgrade teachers’ activity centres into “centres of excellence” for educational technology. “We hope to achieve our goal of equipping all schools with smartboards by 2027, which will also see the rollout of a new curriculum,” she said.
This announcement took place today, during the Smartboard Handover Ceremony and Declaration of 100 Percent Smartboard Sponsorship for Penang Schools, which was held at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Bayan Lepas. “Congratulations to Penang for its outstanding commitment. I hope this inspires other states to follow suit in enhancing the quality of education”, she said. The state Education Department director, Wan Sajiri Wan Hassan, was also in attendance.

It was also pointed out that Penang is the first state to achieve full smartboard usage across all 396 schools. Fadhlina said that this was done through collaboration involving Unity Government MPs, the state government, and strategic partners such as Public Bank.
The minister said smartboards will encourage an interactive and effective learning process, while simultaneously boosting the students’ digital skills. She also added that, while technology is vital, teachers remain essential for character-building and moral development.
