Google has started rolling out new features for Gemini to free users, which has been pretty uncharacteristic for the company until recently. Shortly after announcing real-time prompts for Gemini Live, the internet search giant has followed it up with Gemini 2.5 Pro (experimental). Over the weekend, the company says that the latter is now available to free users.
The gist of Gemini 2.5 Pro is for it to be a model that’s more capable in terms of reasoning, analysis and context. Probably also worth noting that this version 2.5 got a Pro model first, where 2.0 started with the more efficient Flash. It was first rolled out for Advanced users via the Google AI Studio and the Gemini app, with Vertex AI following in the coming weeks.

As mentioned, free users can now also get access to Google Gemini 2.5 Pro. But of course, not all free users are treated equally, as you’ll still need to be signed in to make use of it. Stay signed out and you’ll still be limited to the one Gemini 2.0 Flash model.
Beyond the rollout to free users, the company also says that it is “working hard to being Gemini 2.5 Pro to everyone on mobile too”. And while no specific figures were shared, Google also says that rate limits still apply, presumably more so for non-paying users.
