Prime minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has stated that the Goods and Services Tax (GST) will only be implemented in Malaysia once the minimum income threshold, which currently stands at RM1,500, rises to between RM3,000 and RM4,000 per month. He revealed this while speaking at the 78th annual general meeting of the Associated Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia (ACCCIM) during the weekend.
Anwar acknowledged that GST is an efficient and transparent tax system and would generate higher revenue for the government. However, he stressed that the needs of the lower-income population must be considered before introducing such a system, and it would be unfair to impose the tax at the current wage levels.
The prime minister drew comparisons with other nations that have successfully implemented consumption taxes only after ensuring their citizens enjoy higher income levels. He also stressed the need to combat corruption and political misuse before reintroducing GST, ensuring that the system operates fairly and transparently.
Anwar stated that for now, the government’s priority will remain focused on strengthening the economy, raising wages, and implementing reforms. Any future GST must align with principles of fairness and justice, safeguarding the interests of Malaysians, he added.
