Moore Threads (MTT) isn’t a name the PC Gaming world would be familiar with but the Chinese brand made some headway last year when it launched the world’s first GPU that uses the PCIe 5.0 interface, a feat that neither AMD, Intel, nor NVIDIA have yet to achieve with their GPUs. That being said, the three major brands may still have the edge against the Chinese GPU maker and its graphics cards, especially when it comes to the critical and core reason for its existence: gaming.
Thanks to the German tech outlet, ComputerBase, who took an MTT S80 and recently launched S30, an entry-level graphics card, and benchmarked it against the AMD Ryzen 5 7600G and its Radeon 760M integrated GPU. ComputerBase tested the card with its drivers, and with a select number of game titles. It should be noted that, unsurprisingly, not all games on the site’s list ran – major titles such as Cyberpunk 2077, Diablo IV, and even Ratchet & Clank failed to run, presumably due to driver incompatibility.
With the games that could run, though, the outcome was both clear and surprising: both the MTT S80 and S30 were nowhere near the gaming performance of the Radeon 760M. On average, the RDNA3-based integrated GPU churned out an average framerate of 67 fps, while the S80 only eked out 42 fps and the S30 11 fps, all running at FHD resolution. For the record, the two GPUs were paired with a Ryzen 7 5800X. The exception to the rule, for the S80 specifically, was with DOTA 2, where the GPU managed a healthy 66 fps on average.
It is also clear that both MTT GPUs clearly lack the support for the DirectX 12 API in the majority of titles. Worse, these GPUs also consumed 200W on average, all while being outperformed by AMD’s Ryzen 8000G Series APUs, which have a maximum TDP of 65W, by design. That said, there may be other reasons consumers would purchase cards such as the S80 and S30, especially in China, where global GPU restrictions are clearly taking their toll.
